May is National Osteoporosis Month! According with the National Osteoporosis Foundation, osteoporosis and low bone mass are health threats for 55 percent of the U.S. population aged 50 and older. This disease is often called the “silent killer” as the condition cannot be seen or felt. Risk factors include family history, smoking, alcohol consumption, poor calcium intake, inactivity, and even excess caffeine intake. Studies indicate that soft drinks containing phosphoric acid can impair calcium absorption and lead to decreased bone density. While it can be more difficult to get adequate calcium without dairy products, tofu, enriched orange juice, spinach, almonds, and raw broccoli are all calcium contributors to the diet!
